“We are Woman!” A poem & a celebratory post about the power of a woman (Esp the single & childless woman)!

This week marked ‘International Women’s Day’ & ‘Mother’s Day’ ~ Day’s for celebrating all things woman!

A lot of people concentrate on the wonderful job we have of carrying human life form inside us, being a mother, a life-giver, a wife, a homemaker etc. However, if you are single and childless do not feel any less of a woman or feel uncelebrated, unrecognised or insignificant!  These days ARE for you too!!

I decided to write a poem to encourage those of us who are single and childless to still embrace days we feel highlight our ‘don’t have’s’ and instead celebrate all that we do have – after all we still have the power of being a woman! 😉

“WHO IS THE PERSON BEHIND THE KEYBOARD?” Interviewing Helen’s Journey as she is nominated for the ‘Liebster Award 2018’

Within the blogging world are ‘Blogger Awards’ awarded by fellow bloggers as they wish to know more about you.

This is because with most of these awards the person nominating you gets to ask you any questions they would like you to answer to get a better insight into who you are.

“I enjoy receiving these awards as it gives me a chance to open up and let my readers see more of the person I am away from my keypad.”

– Helen’s Journey

I was recently nominated for the ‘Liebster Award 2018’ by Terez Erickson from her blog ‘Inspire Me’ – we connected via Facebook blogger groups. (Click on her name to go and read her post in which she nominated me)

The Liebster Award was created by The Global Aussie in 2011 and is given to a favored blogger by another blogger as an expression of endearment and appreciation. Liebster in German means:’ sweetest, kindest, nicest, dearest, beloved, lovely, kind, pleasant, valued, cute, endearing, and welcome’. I know right, what a lovely list of attributes to have someone nominate you for representing!

helens journey nominated for Liebster Award 2018. 11 question get to know me interview

11 Questions to get to know the person behind Helen’s Journey better!

Here are my answers to the 11 questions Terez asked me all about myself:

1. When you were a kid what did you want to be when you grew up?

When I was a kid I didn’t have a dream job in mind like most such as a teacher or a nurse etc. My natural yearning was to be a mother and have children to look after. At first it was my dolls but then when I was 6 my mom gave birth to my little brother. How chuffed was I to have my own live doll to look after! lol. I help my mom do everything with him – bath, bottles, nappies, the works. I literally carried him around with me EVERYWHERE!!! (fond memories)

2. What three adjectives best describe your personality?

Caring, Compassionate & creative! (It was a toss-up between compassionate and crazy to be honest!)

3. What was a fear you conquered?

When I was younger it was doing the hardest black runs when skiing. Being at the top and peering over the edge when it looks so steep and actually pushing yourself over the edge, setting off into the unknown… was a bit scary lol!

4. If you were a Looney Tunes character which would you be?

Tweedy Pie – fluttering my eyelashes but behind the blue eyes I have a cheeky side 😉

5. What is something that you never told anyone about you?

Erm… I don’t think I’ve told you all how much I love fancy dress? I’ve been to fancy dress parties as: Cher, Lady Gaga, Snow White, representing India in a sari at a Countries from around the world theme party, A school girl, fame… told you I love it! haha! But hey my drama degree runs in my veins, I can’t help enjoying playing different characters & being in role 😉

6. What makes you smile every time you think about it?

My late Grandad Mac ❤ Thinking of him just warms my heart & makes me smile! Did you read the poem I wrote about him? It captures his essence to a T! (Click HERE to read it)

7. What is your greatest strength and greatest weakness?

I think they are the same thing – my kindness! If you need help & I can help you I will. But certain people in my past have taken my kindness for weakness as I find it hard to not help you when you ask for it , even if you have done me a wrong or not treated me nicely.

I had to find the balance between Christian duty to help and the right not to be used and having the ability to say no without guilt. I mastered this in September 2017 & had a healthy cut of the unhealthy people in my life – Thank the Lord I finally did, as 1 month later in October 2017 I started blogging!!

8. If you could live one day of your life over which would it be and why?

Maybe the day I graduated. Not because it was the best day ever or anything so I’d love to experience it again, but to do my photographs again as I don’t like them. Sounds vain, but it’s because I was suffering from Post Viral Fatigue after the mumps which started my whole health demise saga.

I look so tired, drained and basically ill on the photos. After using all my energy on the long day of standing in ques and sitting for so long as all the names were called out – I was exhausted! So much so, I didn’t even smile properly on my photos let alone smile with the pride I feet for completing the 3 years it took to get it.

I’m so proud of my 2:1 Bachelor of the Arts Degree because of the hard work & commitment it took to get it – but I really don’t feel like that this isn’t captured in my graduation photos! Haha *cue us all singing the song “You’re so vain” like were on stage with Carly Simon & Taylor Swift ;-)*

9. What quality do you like most in other people?

A kind heart. You know when you speak nicely to waiting staff, you speak respectfully to people who are doing jobs to help like dustbin collectors, cleaners etc. A heart that, even if they say no when a homeless person asks for money that they say it with a warm smile and not a look of disgust. Those things I was taught growing up and I still hold as important things to do as an adult and for others who may be watching too.

I remember coming out a shop with my nephew and a homeless person was sitting on the floor. So I smiled at them and said hello, asked them if they would like a pack of some of the crisps we had just brought and handed them over. After they said thank you and I said “no problem, take care, bye” my nephew who was about 4 at the time joined in as we walked away and said “bye” to them too – it warmed my heart! ❤

10. Would you rather be breathtakingly beautiful, charmingly witty, or angelically good?

Charmingly witty! Looks fade, I wouldn’t be able to drink any cocktails if I was angelically good. But my humour that brings me smiles and laughs daily – even if I’m laughing at myself 😉

quote from helen's journey blog about receiving blogger awards as she is awarded the liebster award 2018 www.helensjourney.com

Here are my 11 Questions for my nominees: (I think they will make you realise why I was considering ‘crazy’ as an adjective to describe myself)

  1. One of my favourite UK Garage tunes has the lyrics “I’ll bring you flowers in the pouring rain” (click on the lyrics to open up the song in a new window to have a sing-song ;-)) Which type of flower that represents you, would you choose to bring me on a rainy day and why?
  2. Tell us about your most treasured item in life!
  3. If blogs had to have a theme tune that played every time people came onto your website – which song would you choose?
  4. If you were limited to only reading one genre of blogs, what would you choose? (ie: lifestyle blogs / beauty blogs / fashion blogs / food blogs, etc)
  5. If you had to choose a holiday destination that best summed up your blog, where would it be and why?
  6. Who or what inspired you to start a blog?
  7. If you had to only watch the same programme over and over again in life – what would you choose?
  8. Choose three words to describe yourself – one word for reflecting your mind, one reflecting your body and one reflecting your soul!
  9. If you had to make a personalised cocktail for your blog, what would you call it and what would be its ingredients?
  10. if in the end times, the big brother style government limited you to using only one social media app – which one would you choose to keep and why?
  11. I’m currently growing my hair for The Princess Trust charity that uses hair donations to make wigs for children with hair loss from cancer. What’s the best thing you’ve ever done for charity? Or would love to do for charity in the future?

The bloggers I am nominating for this award are some new or new’ish’ bloggers to get their blogs seen by a wider audience. Some others aren’t new bloggers but ones I wanted to know more about through them answering my questions:

Still want to know more about the lady behind the words?

Then why not read my other award nomination blogs where I’m asked more questions & have to list 3 things about myself to share with readers (click on each award to open blog post in a new tab):

What I’ve Learnt from over a Decade with Chronic Illness! Top 5 Life Lessons Fibromyalgia has taught me!

A reflection I am writing as I am undergoing treatment:

As I type this, I’m currently on a hospital bed receiving treatment for the chronic illness I’ve had for just over 11 years. As I am laying here with an IV drip going into my hand pumping anaesthetic around my body to try to numb my nervous system down, I find myself reflecting on the life lessons chronic illness has brought along with it…

  • You never know what’s around the corner.
  • You find out who is willing to make the effort for you, when you are simply unable to do it back.
  • There is a big difference between being alive and actually living.
  • Life comes down to love.
  • There is always a way to do it or an alternative.
  • You find out what your passion is when you can’t do it any longer.
  • You discover your core relationships.
  • The power of the mind and destructive thinking.
  • The danger of owning your diagnoses.

I could really let my fingers carry on and list a thousand things, esp as I’m on this IV drip for a few hours…but I’ll only pick a few from this list to explain in more depth:

Questions L asked me & my answers:

1. Why did you start your blog and how long have you been blogging?

I started blogging the 7th October 2017 – I know right I can’t believe its only been 4 months, my fingers are numb from typing like its 18 months 😉 *Disclaimer: Joking, no fingers were hurt making this blog*

It all began when I started to share on my personal social media about changing things in my everyday life to be more natural; such as changing to organic food, getting rid of plastic tubs and bottles, getting rid of all chemical products, etc. My friends showed lots of interest and many asked me to keep them posted on my steps going forward, for going down the more natural lifestyle route.

From there I thought what better way to keep everyone informed than writing a blog to share my journey… and so ‘Helen’s Journey’ was dreamt into being and here it is! Click to read more about this is my blog: “WELCOME TO HELEN’S JOURNEY – HERE IS WHERE IT ALL BEGAN…”  and more about my writing journey in this second blog: “MY ‘WHY’ FOR BLOGGING!”

2. What inspired your blog name?

Life has been one crazy rollercoaster journey for me. I’ve had health issues since I was diagnosed with IBS at 17, which later at 21 turned more serious in the form of Chronic Fatigue Syndrome & at 23 Fibromyalgia. 11 years have passed & I’ve collected an extra list of other conditions & life events along the way too.

HOWEVER, my mental journey & spiritual journey esp this past 2 years following a more natural route has been enlightening! I just wanted to share it with the world & encourage others to change things for themselves, try new things, learn new things and enjoy the ride of life’s journey!

3. Who is your blog aimed at?

Anyone who is into wellness & positivity – I even throw in a few poems along the way! 😉 Along with wanting to know more about my discoveries of a “more natural route in life for MIND, BODY, SOUL and SPIRIT!” and replacing things in my everyday life in search of a more natural approach to my lifestyle, diet, beauty regime, health and mental health.

I also write openly about my health struggles with chronic illnesses, but you don’t have to be a fellow sufferer to read about that! That’s the whole point of awareness, that it is reaching people who don’t know for themselves the struggles and hardships of chronic pain and can get an understanding from your openness.

I don’t have a specific audience age group, it really is open aged – I have comments from a 16 year old and from the other end of the scale, a retired ‘elder’. It isn’t gender specific either, even though I seem to get more female readers commenting on posts, I still have male followers.

4. What do you most enjoy about blogging?

Getting feedback off people and knowing my words have inspired, challenged, touched, encouraged and comforted people – is just AMAZING! It makes all the hard work and time put into it all worth it! To hear people say they changed from a chemical product because of my blog and now their eczema has cleared up is heart warming and so encouraging!

The comments on my latest blog have been lovely – click HERE to go read them.

5. What would you like to change about blogging?

I need a class for bloggers to go to in a classroom full of laptops and have interactive teaching on SEO, affiliate marketing, legal disclaimers and all those buzz words I’m not educated on. YET… 😉

6. Do you blog full-time or balance it alongside another career?

I’m still classing myself as a newbie as I only posted my 1st blog on 7th Oct 2017. So four months in to balancing blogging with everything else in life – it’s been hard work, you have to put a lot into it; time, effort, tiredness, pushing through the pain, etc. Yet its been worth it! Who knows if my blog goes viral, if this will turn into a career… ooooooo wouldn’t that be something!

7. What tips would you give to your fellow bloggers?

To embrace the arms of the blogging world, which to be honest I had no idea even existed. I started blogging and doing social media for my blog and i suddenly found myself sucked in full force into a big fraternity of bloggers supporting bloggers & it’s been FAB! I’ve chatted, congratulated, been congratulated and really been encouraged by the support from a collective of fellow friendly bloggers.

HOWEVERRRRRRRRR I was also sucked in to the crazy game of follow/unfollow. What kind of foolishness that people have got time out of their day for that! Life is about your amount of followers so badly you put your energy into playing cat and mouse getting the follow then pounce with the unfollow when they get your follow. SEE even my explanation of it is confusing because it is so twisted and backwards. Sorry i think its clear I ain’t into that AT ALL!! The ‘unfollower’ app I downloaded became my best friend in regaining control & power over my accounts.  haha  *and breathe*

8. Do you actually put pen to paper to write your blogs or work on a computer/laptop etc?

I work on a laptop or tablet to write my blogs. However I do have a notebook that i write down ideas in when they come to mind so i don’t forget them. I’m old school in i love grabbing a pen and just letting my hand flow away writing without having to think about it. But after 3 years at university you are well-practiced at typing also, so I can flow the new school way on a keyboard too.

9. What inspires your blogs/how do you come up with new content?

I don’t plan blogs ahead of time and I don’t use a blog planner. Will I get thrown out the blogging cool gang now? 😉

I literally sit down and start writing and it all just flows out of me. Other times I see something that inspires me to write about it (such as washing my hands in the bathroom using my natural hand wash – i looked at it & thought I need to blog about you! and so i did: “HAND CARE THE NATURAL WAY! LOOKING AFTER YOUR HANDS BY WASHING THEM THE NON-CHEMICAL WAY!”(click to read it in a new tab)

Yet my blog “MAKING FRIENDS WITH GRIEF” was written on the anniversary of my Grandad’s death and I ended up writing a poem for him – so even though the poem was spontaneous the blog itself was structured round a specific date.

10. What is your dream job?

If money and health were not an obstacle I’d love to design, open and run my own “wellness centre”. Here, as the big boss lady, I’d house all the different natural treatments that have helped me become healthier, run workshops on coping techniques for chronic illness, have professionals to teach knowledge on nutrition, mindfulness, stretching & exercise, supplements, holistic treatments etc. It really takes a multidisciplinary approach to ‘manage’ the condition Fibromyalgia and other chronic illness under the same umbrella medically.

11. What do you aim to achieve by the end of the year?

By the end of the year I’d of liked to not only built my blog up to receive more traffic and interaction. I also want to feature lots of friends businesses on my blog as there really are some great initiatives out there and creative souls I think deserve to be highlighted.

I’d also like to get more people in my Fibromyalgia & Chronic Illness awareness and support group on Facebook & have everyone interacting and helping each other through even more than my 517 members already do! Check out the group here: Helens FIBROMYALGIA AWARENESS GROUP (also relevant 4 other chronic illness)

MY NOMINATIONS & QUESTIONS FOR THEM:

I’m not only nominating people for their support in my last 4 months blogging but also some bloggers whom I’ve only just connected with, but whom I’d like to know more about through asking them my 11 questions:

MY 11 QUESTIONS:

  1. Where in the world are you based and have you ever met up in person with any fellow bloggers in your local area?
  2. If blogs had to have a theme tune that played every time people came onto your website – which song would you choose?
  3. Why did you choose the specific niche you write about for your blog?
  4. Tell us about the best photograph you have taken, that is featured in one of your blogs (include copy of the photo in your answer).
  5. I turn 35 in September and I’m planning on a getaway holiday with a group of friends to celebrate, somewhere with no more than a few hours flight from England, some September sun & cool places/buildings etc to see – where would you recommend and why?
  6. Which social media app do you get most blog traffic through and what makes it work so well for you?
  7. How long have you been blogging and have you ever taken time out away from blogging during that time?
  8. If you had to choose a smoothie recipe to represent your blog what would it be?
  9. Have you ever heard of Fibromyalgia other than from me/my blog/my social media?
  10. What piece of advice would you give bloggers for creating images and for taking photos / flatlays / blog feature images etc?
  11. Do you make money off blogging? If so how?

“You are…” a SELF-LOVE AFFIRMATION to remind us how AMAZING we are & encouragement for speaking positively about ourselves.

“You are…” AFFIRMATION:

“NOTE TO SELF, Remember that you are AMAZING, PERFECT, EXCEPTIONAL. BRILLIANT, MAGNIFICENT, AWESOME and MAGICAL… Just by being who you are!”

The importance of how we speak to ourselves and how we speak about ourselves:

Children show us how powerful words spoken over them are, eg: Self Fulfilling Prophecy and Self-Defeating Prophecy. Both being true in adulthood also.

“In other words, a positive or negative prophecy, strongly held belief, or delusion—declared as truth when it is actually false—may sufficiently influence people so that their reactions ultimately fulfil the once-false prophecy.” (Quote from Wikipedia explaining Self Fulfilling Prophecy – click here for more information)

If you tell yourself over and over that you are useless, incapable, unlovable etc enough times – then eventually you will believe it & that is how you constantly see yourself.

HAND CARE the NATURAL WAY! Looking after your hands by washing them the non-chemical way! Natural Hand Wash product reviews.

When it came to replacing products around my house from the ‘normal’ chemical-based products to natural chemical-free products, one of the first things I swapped was my bathroom hand wash!

Now, I’m the type of person who uses tissue in my hand to open the bathroom door in public toilets, that annoying person who reaches into her bag for her (chemical-free) hand sanitizer after shopping, in restaurants or after using public toilets even though I’d just washed my hands. Yes, that person – and I know everyone reading this knows someone in life who is exactly the same!

I thought I was being health conscious in doing this, but in reality, I was reducing germs on my hands but covering them in chemicals. I know now that isn’t healthier at all!

HOW TO GIVE YOURSELF A BREAK when life makes you HARD ON YOURSELF! A free printable Affirmation, to encourage Self-Love, Forgiveness & Letting Go.

This post also includes a free printable affirmation, to encourage self-love, forgiveness & letting go…

How negativity can affect your health and mental health:

Being too hard on ourselves has damaging effects, not only on our mental health but also our physical health too. It is scientifically proven that negative thinking and negative thoughts worsen a person’s health, lowers immunity and affects the brains function. Chronic stress, worry and negative emotions can unbalance our hormones and the brain needs a certain level of specific hormones to create the feeling of ‘happiness’.

That is why ‘self-love’ or ‘being kind to yourself’ is sooooooooo important in life, esp when you are already in ill-health or struggle mentally with issues of self or low mood.

Remembering the REASON for the SEASON! A short Christmas Day Reflection

“Remembering the ‘Reason for the Season’!”

The big day is finally here; CHRISTMAS DAY 2017! Today’s chosen image is 1 from my childhood Church:

reason for the season christmas reflection

As you can see I perfectly positioned the camera to get the altar & cross wall hanging in the photo along with the Christmas Tree. For me, it is the perfect reminder of the reason we even celebrate Christmas! Although not the official date of Jesus’ birth (Yeshua (ישוע) in original Hebrew text) and also pagan origins of using evergreen fir trees that aren’t linked to this – it is what Christmas Time and the symbol of a Christmas Tree has meant for the generations of people alive today.

As I look at it, I see the Christmas tree representing the commercial side of Christmas, the presents, the tv toy commercials etc. Yet, I also see it as a communal point:

  • Where people gather around, as well as presents.
  • Families going out and choosing their tree together.
  • A group of people all decorating a tree together as a joint experience.
  • Children gathered underneath the tree on Christmas morning ripping open their presents.

Then in stark contrast in the distance you will see the beautiful and majestic altar and cross wall hanging. The cross representing the reason we even celebrate Christmas today – as Christmas is the start of the story with Jesus being born and the cross where he died representing the very act in which he was born to do.

I see the two being placed close together as a reminder to still put Jesus into Christmas;

  • The many children dressing up and reenacting the nativity story in their school plays.
  • Saying or writing CHRISTmas not Xmas which was designed to cross Christ out of Christmas, which is ironic as in the end it’s all about a cross anyways lol.
  • Choosing Christian Christmas Cards that have pictures of the nativity story on such as  the stable, wise men, shepherds, angels, the star, pregnant mary on the donkey etc.
  • Going to Church on Christmas morning or midnight Mass on Christmas Eve night.

Even if you don’t identify as being a Christian, remembering the reason for the season is for you also. For, if you believe it’s only a story then what an inspiring story to acknowledge and remember!

  • It is full of hope, wonder and amazement.
  • It has got community spirit from the shepherds.
  • Astrology and present giving from the wise men.
  • Spiritual support from angels and the spiritual realm.
  • A love so strong that Joseph sticks around to marry and look after Mary even though she’s pregnant & he didn’t take part in physically making it with Mary.
  • Strangers helping strangers in need out with stay in a free stable.
  • The hopes and dreams of all this baby would grow up to be and the responsibility on his shoulders from birth because of his fate to come….

What a story to remember this Christmas time! So please join me in remembering THE REASON FOR THE SEASON! ❤

“Keep OLD Traditions but don’t forget to make NEW ones!” Day 10 of 12 Days of CHRISTMAS REFLECTIONS with HELEN’S JOURNEY

Welcome to another of my ‘Christmas Reflections’, inspired by my own Christmas Photographs.

So today’s countdown is 2 days until we wake up on Christmas Morning. Yes only this weekend to go! This excitement is a lift for some who sail high on the Christmas Spirit, yet a drag for others who have so much to do they wish it was two weeks left before the big day not two days!

However it makes you feel, I invite you to join me each day this Christmas season, as I share daily Christmas Reflections and of course one of my accompanying Christmas Photos that helped inspire the reflections! (I just love taking photos & sharing pictures lol)

Today’s image brings the Christmas reflection of keeping old traditions but not forgetting to make new ones! As it shows my old angel and my new one:

old traditions v new traditions by helens journey
Now we all have our own Christmas Traditions when the Christmas season is here once again. Whether it’s the decorations, whats on the dinner menu, or whose job it is to wake the grandparents up from their naps as we are impatiently waiting for them to wake up so we can open up our presents 😉

Even when it comes to our Christmas Trees; there are some that cant wait to get it up and put it up before December even arrives, while others stick to the tradition of putting the tree up 12 days before Christmas. Then there is the traditions of who decorates it and how, if you stick to a colour scheme and specific design or just put things on however and wherever you feel like it.

One of the biggies in our house growing up was whose homemade angel was going to go on the top of the tree and who would put it up there as the last decoration to go on.

Now I made mine when I was 5 years old, as I’m sure you can tell by looking at it, so it sure took a battering over the next 25 years as it continued to take its turn on top of the tree. It is now retired from tree topping duty and is in my memory box resting its wings.

christmas angel made by helens journey aged 5

However, now living separately from my family home, the big decision was: Would I rigidly stick to tradition and place my very aged angel on top of my own tree?

While the angel rotation tradition was enjoyable and that is what I fondly think of when I look at my angel, I had to make the decision to start a new tradition and replace it with a modern angel and certainly a much younger model 😉

As you can see from the picture of the angel I made when I was 5, the years have taken its toll on it and the aging process like for ourselves defiantly shows – with malting hair and a hunched over back.

Well if you’re bending over backwards to stick to old traditions that have you breaking your back to do them the old way, even though they stress you out as the old ways just aren’t practical anymore – then maybe its time to replace them with new traditions?! Sometimes change is the best way forward… “Out with the OLD and in with the NEW!”

“Remember the small stuff” Day 7 of 12 Days of CHRISTMAS REFLECTIONS with HELEN’S JOURNEY

So todays countdown is 6 days until we wave in Christmas Day. For some half the fun is counting down the days, in contrast others may find counting down the days really isn’t a fun activity.

However it makes you feel, I invite you to join me each of the 12 days till Christmas, as I share daily Christmas Reflections and of course an accompanying Christmas image! (I just love taking photos & sharing pictures lol)

Today’s chosen image is of a giant Ferrero Rocher:

25578914_1410065652435086_2111142109_o

I’m not sure the photo does it justice, it really was super sized! But is bigger always better?

Some strive for the biggest christmas ever each year. They spend so much time and energy on making things super sized and making them amazing for people to look at and experience.

Sometimes the phase “Good things come in small packages” is true. It’s the small touches that will stand out to people. So even though you may be going all out to create a Christmas extravaganza, which is totally up to you but id say pay attention to the small things too – as they often touch people the most and what they will pass on to others.

Lets remember the importance of smallness amongst this big Christmas season!

Please join me tomorrow for Day 7 of 12 Days of CHRISTMAS REFLECTIONS

“Trying to stay STABLE, while we celebrate the Stable!” Day 6 of 12 Days of CHRISTMAS REFLECTIONS with HELEN’S JOURNEY

So todays countdown is 7 days until we wake up and it’s December 25th. For some the excitement of the season mounts as the days get closer, but for others it’s a real strain knowing they have less days than yesterday to complete everything.

However it makes you feel, I invite you to join me each of the 12 days till Christmas, as I share daily Christmas Reflections and of course an accompanying Christmas image! (I just love taking photos & sharing pictures lol)

Todays chosen image below is of a nativity scene, complete with stable but no star 😉

PhotoGrid_1513608544224

Some of you may have noticed, that there wasn’t a post yesterday for day 5 of the Christmas Countdown posts, that’s because I had a bad Fibromyalgia flare (the chronic health condition I suffer with) and my body just said “NO!”

Now I could be hard on myself, make me feel like a let down and a failure as I wasn’t able to stick to the commitment I made etc. Now this is always a battle, as inside I’m still the same girl as before Fibromyalgia restricted me physically and my character is very driven, determined and committed to getting what I want or achieving goals I’ve set myself. However, physically, my body doesn’t give me the privilege of being that girl anymore, it doesn’t care what I want or what goal I had set myself, if it can’t manage it at that moment then my body isn’t doing it and if I try to do it then the punishment is 1000 times worse.

I’ve struggled with pacing as the girl inside me doesn’t want to listen to my body, pay attention to pain levels or have restrictions. Yet at certain times you have no choice – yesterday was 1 of those days!

So instead of stressing I decided to try to stay stable. No not the stable in the picture, that was just me enjoying doing a play on words for ya’ll 😉

STABLE =

  • (of an object or structure) not likely to give way or overturn; firmly fixed.
  • (of a person) sane and sensible; not easily upset or disturbed

I always think of things both mentally and physically, as I know too well what its like being restricted or affected beyond your control in both aspects of life. So looking at the description above of what stable means, I see the act of ‘staying stable’ as being both in body and mind.

The definition for structure being relevant for body – so trying my hardest not to let situations overturn me or cause me to give way, but to stay firmly fixed.

The definition for person being relevant for mind – so not letting things (like not being able to do day 5 of this writing challenge) upset me or disturb my balance but instead try to stay sane and also sensible.

This is so poignant for this time of year. It’s so easy to be so stressed, stretched and overloaded that we become unstable, when small things can cause us to become disturbed and overturn us. We cause people in our lives to walk on egg shells around us, scared of saying or doing something to tip us over the edge and unhinge us. That’s how much stability affects those around us as well as ourselves internally and physically.

So instead of choosing stress, anger or guilt from not doing a post yesterday, I accepted the disappointment. I chose to look at it from another perspective. I tried to focus on what I could do the next day instead of what I was unable to do. I read lovely comments people had made about my days 1 – 4 posts and it gave me smiles instead of frowns.

So when the roast potatoes burn, take lots of deep breaths, accept the disappointment & be glad you have mashed potatoes done. When the Mother-In-Law isn’t that impressed with her present, smile through gritted teeth and don’t let it take your stability away.

So todays reflection is a reminder from this – that in those times we have a choice = stress or stability. I hope this Christmas Season you choose STABILITY too.

“EVEN SAND CAN STAND WHEN ITS DESIGNED TO FALL” Day 4 of 12 Days of CHRISTMAS REFLECTIONS with HELEN’S JOURNEY

So todays countdown is 9 days until we wave in Christmas Day 2017. Some people find counting down the days exciting, while others find it pressuring.

However it makes you feel, I invite you to join me each of the 12 days till Christmas, as I share daily Christmas Reflections and of course an accompanying Christmas image! (I just love taking photos & sharing pictures lol)

Todays chosen image below, is of presents under a Christmas tree, however this is no ordinary Christmas Tree. This Christmas Tree is actually made of pure sand!!!

christmas picture of a sand chrostmas tree by helens journey
Day 4 of 12 Christmas Image of a Sand Christmas Tree & Presents

This was part of the 2017 ‘American Sand Sculpting Championships’ in which no props were used to help this sand tree stay erected off the ground & stay standing up high. These skilled sand sculptures use only sand, water & tools such as brushes, etc. I see them as skilled engineers 😉

This made me reflect upon hard times in life:

  • When things seem to be falling apart.
  • When everything around us is telling us to stop trying.
  • When things just don’t feel right.
  • When we feel everything is pointing to it being time to give up.
  • When we are seriously wondering what is the point anymore.
  • When nothing we try seems to be working.

Those times are when the critics of this sand tree pipe up; they question the science behind this erected sand tree being possible, they accuse the sculptures of cheating, they don’t believe the rules or honesty of the whole competition, they call it all a scam. They basically tear it to shreds.

My point; in those hard times listed above, stop your mind from turning into that sceptical critic! Instead, try to keep the HOPE of Christmas alive throughout the rest of the year.

The hope that no matter how many critics tell you:

  • To give up.
  • That your business idea is destined to fail.
  • That doctors that say there isn’t anything left to try to help your health anymore.
  • That your goal is impossible with the limited tools you have.
  • That you are too limited by the rules & regulations from the government to succeed.
  • That you wont be able to stand on your own two feet, etc

STOP. PAUSE. In your mind PICTURE this standing sand tree defying odds, and sand is actually standing & staying high into the air even when it’s designed to stay down on the ground. It has no rods inside to keep it from falling and it isn’t propped up. However, it is constructed perfectly to stay erect, even with the limited tools used.

REMIND yourself in those moments of doubt:

  • You can succeed if you keep trying.
  • Goals can be reached if you persevere.
  • You can stay standing even when things try to knock you down.
  • You can make things even when your resources are limited.
  • You can achieve even when restricted by rules.

That air of HOPE that Christmas brings, the magical mist that surrounds traditions, people coming together, people joining in, teamwork, supporting each other, helping others, looking out for the lonely, deprived or homeless… It shouldn’t all be restricted to only this time of year. Let’s try to be conscious of keeping it continuing into the New Year too and beyond!

“LIFE IS LIKE A FRAGILE ORNAMENT” Day 3 of 12 Days of CHRISTMAS REFLECTIONS with HELEN’S JOURNEY

So todays countdown is 10 days until we see Christmas Day 2017. Some people love Christmas & the joy in counting down the days, while others get more stressed the closer the date gets to 25th December.

However it makes you feel, I invite you to join me each of the 12 days till Christmas, as I share daily Christmas Reflections and of course an accompanying Christmas image! (I just love taking photos & sharing pictures lol)

Todays chosen image below, is of crystal glass angel Christmas ornaments. To some maybe a reminder of the angels part in the nativity story, appearing to Mary, Joseph and the shepherds to deliver the News of ‘Jesus’ (originally ‘Yeshua’ in Hebrew).

When I first saw them in person, i just fell in love with them, so pretty and precious. However, looking at them today with fresh eyes, they make me think they represent just how fragile life can be. More of a reflection of whats going on for me & my family right now, but a reminder for all.

angel ornaments christmas reflections helens journey
Life is fragile. precious and a treasure!

Yesterdays post relayed the importance of “PRESENCE over PRESENTS” this Christmas, but the message of these ornaments take it a step further… Don”t just be present in special moments with people but also value them for how precious they are! Memories with loved ones that will stay alive even when the people in them aren’t alive anymore.

These angel ornaments each hold a different symbol in their hands: one a heart, one a star and the third a trumpet. Looking at them through my creative eyes, each symbol carries with it an extra meaning.

christmas reflections of love with helens journey

The heart symbol, not only a symbol of love and I think of Joy also. So not only to value life, but to actually put our hearts into living it and enjoying it with joyous hearts.

The star in the Christmas story is a symbol of announcement and of navigation, telling the wise men of the Birth and to show them where to travel to find him. So knowing how fragile life is, we need to live it with direction and conviction. Knowing what your passion is, your purpose, your gift, your calling – it directs your life, your career, your hobbies. Those are your christmas star reflections with helens journeystars in life, telling you what you were born to do and following its direction.

The trumpet is a much talked about instrument in the Bible, but especially in verses about the last days in the book of Revelation. As a nation in the UK we seem to feel uncomfortable in talking about death, but that is a big thing we should be thinking about esp if you believe a day will come where you either go to heaven or hell or for other religions if you become reincarnated etc. Maybe it’s a reminder that as I believe, there is a spiritual realm after death, christmas trumpets with helens journeythat death or the afterlife shouldn’t be ignored?!

The angels themselves a reminder of how precious life is, these crystal ornaments can get chipped, cracked and ultimately shattered into pieces. That is the reality of life, our life as we know it can be turned upside down in an instant. I’m not trying to be morbid talking about death, but instead, using death’s harsh reality as a push for us all to appreciate how easily life can change or be taken away. As a result we should value life even more! ❤

“PRESENCE over PRESENTS” DAY 2 of 12 DAYS of CHRISTMAS REFLECTIONS with HELEN’S JOURNEY

What do you remember the most – your christmas presents or the people who are present?

So today marks 11 days until Christmas Day 2017 is here. For some the thrill of the countdown is part of the Christmas excitement they have this time of year and for others it is just a reminder of there being one less day to get everything ticked off their ‘TO DO’ list.

However it makes you feel, I invite you to join me each of the 12 days till Christmas, as I share daily Christmas Reflections and of course an accompanying Christmas image! (I just love taking photos & sharing pictures lol)

Todays chosen image below, is a beautiful display of Christmas pressies. How exciting would it be to wake up on christmas morning and see this pile of presents waiting there to be ripped open and they are all for you!

presence over presents christmas reflection helens journey (1)
Chosen Christmas image for Day 2 of 12

Well sorry to disappoint and burst the bubble of illusion, but they are actually fake. My friend Tara is AMAZING at arts, crafts, DIY and decorating, so Christmas is the perfect time for her to show off her skills by decorating the house. These are empty boxes saved throughout the year so at Christmas they can be transformed into these beautiful pressies.

This got me thinking, can I really look back over the years and remember all the presents I’ve gotten for Christmases past? No not all of them, I certainly can’t. But I can look back at Christmases past and remember all the people that were actually there, who shared in celebrations with us, who was playing along in all the Christmas games.

I’ll always remember how much of a cheat my Nan is at pictionary, writing down words then scribbling them out trying not to get caught! I cherish even more the presence of my late Grandad being there for all those Christmases past, now he can’t be here for any more, wearing his Christmas ties that lit up or played a Christmas tune when you pressed it. *fond, fond memories*

It’s moments we remember!

The presents might as well be empty, as in years down the line it’s people’s presence we remember – not all the presents we got.

Life is so fragile and precious. I know in my Grandads last days on earth, feeling the presence of those around him being by his side and feeling the presence of love and care in the air – I know it brought him peace and comfort. Your presence could mean the world to someone and you could miss that because you are so focused on what present you got them, if they will like it or what present they got you.

So of course enjoy the whole ‘presents’ side of Christmas; the planning, the buying, the wrapping, the giving, the receiving. But at the same time remember to be present in those moments as they happen, savour and enjoy the people in your presence this Christmas time. ❤

“DON’T GET YOUR TINSEL IN A TANGLE!” Day 1 of 12 Days of CHRISTMAS REFLECTIONS with HELEN’S JOURNEY

Childhood Christmas memories that can give you life lessons when you’re older:

So today marks 12 days until Christmas 2017 is upon us. For some its exciting and for some it’s a reminder of how few days they have left to do so many things.

However it makes you feel, I invite you to join me each of the 12 days till Christmas, as I share daily Christmas Reflections and of course an accompanying Christmas image! (I just love taking photos & sharing pictures lol)

Todays chosen image is of a Christmas Mug that caught my eye while out shopping, clearly not for its beauty or magnificence but for its slogan; “DON’T GET YOUR TINSEL IN A TANGLE”

Day 1 of 12 days of Christmas Reflections

For me, this slogan instantly gave me flashbacks of my Dad sitting on the living room floor trying to untangle the Christmas tree lights. Every year my mom would say “Why don’t we just buy some new lights” because to her it looked an impossible, annoying task or a boring waste of precious time as there was so much on her minds ‘To Do’ list to do instead so all is ready for Christmas Day.

Yet my father, saw it as less of a chore and more of a challenge. He actually enjoyed untangling them as if it was a quest on Crystal Maze (a puzzle solving game show for those that don’t know it.) Once he’d gotten through the untangling process, then came the testing of the lights to see if they all lit up or some bulbs needed replacing. Sure enough most years there were new bulbs needed, but once replaced they worked perfectly.

It posed a question to ask ourselves today:

“Are we REPLACERS or RESTORERS?”

Would we throw our tangled tinsel away and buy new untangled tinsel, or would we give it time, patience, concentration and TLC to try to untangle our tinsel?

It made me realise that we do this the rest of the year too, some of us see buying new things as an easier solution and others see fixing the old so they work again as the answer. My conclusion is both are useful reactions but to different things in life. Sometimes “Replace the old with the new” is the right trail of thought, other times “The grass isn’t always greener on the other side” is needed to remind us to work on what we have instead of what else we could have instead.

We just need the wisdom to know the difference and when we need to be restorers or replacers!

Who knew a quote on a Christmas mug that initially made me laugh, would then bring Christmas memories to mind that would create such questions as these?! Lol

Please join me tomorrow for Day 2 of 12 Days of Christmas Reflections!

How you can join in with raising awareness on Mental Health… “IT’S A WIN!” As a Helen’s Journey blog is a chosen feature blog in #MentalHealthMonday Twitter Competition

It’s an honour joining in to put the spotlight on the issue of Mental Health!

I’m proud to of had two of my blog’s chosen in this #MentalHealthMonday Twitter competition.

I think this is a brilliant idea to shine a light on Mental Health issues and struggles that many people face and that some are brave enough to write about and highlight.

My chosen blogs are (click on titles to open blogs in a new tab to read after this post):

  1.  “MY WORLD MENTAL HEALTH DAY SPENT WITH THE ARTS”
  2. “YOU ARE…” A SELF-LOVE AFFIRMATION TO REMIND US HOW AMAZING WE ARE!

How can you join in with raising awareness for Mental Health?

“Just how does this competition work?” I hear you all ask. Well on the 1st Monday of every month tweeters are invited to share their blogs on Mental Health attached to the meme for the #MentalHealthMonday competition.

Then the creator of the competition posts a blog to announce the handful of those shared blogs that have been chosen from all the entries, as that months Mental Health Monday’ featured blogs for readers.

Below is an explanation from Mel at her blog The Book Moo who is the joint creator of #MentalHealthMonday with Rebecca Burke from the blog BexCapades:

“The idea came from Rebecca revisiting her depression diary from 2015 and deciding to share her experiences to show that light comes out of dark times.

So now, every first Monday of each month will be a Mental Health Monday, where everyone can share their own experiences and a handful will be chosen to feature on Rebecca’s post each month.

helens journey blog wins mental health monday twitter competition

Having ‘Delayed Sleep Phase Syndrome’ meaning I have a delayed body clock, really came in useful on Nov 30th 2017, as this all came about from me being awake and on my Twitter and seeing a late night/early morning tweet by Rebecca with the ‘Mental Health Monday’ competition meme in – that I basically wouldn’t of seen if I would of been sleeping!

I didn’t think twice in replying to her pinned post thread with one of my blogs regarding Mental Health, which you can all read here: “MY WORLD MENTAL HEALTH DAY SPENT WITH THE ARTS”.

Then by the end of Dec 1st 2017 I was surprised with the lovely news that my blog had been chosen as one of her favourites to feature for the month of December 2017. You can see the list of all chosen blogs featured alongside my blog, in Rebecca’s 1st official results blog: Mental Health Monday and I’d also encourage you to read Mel’s courageous post about her experience with depression here too.

December so far has been a brilliant month for HELENS JOURNEY as along side this achievement, after 8 weeks of Blogging I was also nominated for my 1st blogger award, which you can read about here: “MY ‘MYSTERY BLOGGER AWARD’ NOMINATION & MY ANSWERS FOR YOU TO GET TO KNOW ME BETTER”.

*UPDATE on Helen’s Journey wins*

Then I entered my blog “YOU ARE…” A SELF-LOVE AFFIRMATION TO REMIND US HOW AMAZING WE ARE! and it was chosen as a feature blog for #MentalHealthMonday competition for February 2018! (Click on blog title to take you to read the chosen post).

I’m excited to update that February 2018 have been exciting month for blog awards and competitions too as I won “The Sunshine Blogger Award”  and also won the “Feature Friday” Twitter competition too! Yay! #grateful #thankful #proud

(click on the blog title to open the blog posts in new windows)

So, I will close in saying “Thank You” to Rebecca for choosing my blog posts, along side saying “Thank You” to every person who has past by http://www.helensjourney.com and followed my footsteps through reading my blogs and poems! I appreciate every click, like, comment, share and encouraging feedback from you all. THANKS x

My 1st ‘MYSTERY BLOGGER AWARD’ Nomination & my answers for you to get to know me better

YAY! I have now officially been blogging for 8 weeks, so to be nominated for “THE MYSTERY BLOGGERS AWARD” – my 1st blogging award already is really touching, exciting and daunting all rolled together.

“What is that?” I hear you asking (well I sure asked that myself being a newbie to Blog Awards). The creator of this award Okoto Enigma has written a blog “My Greatest Creation Yet: The Mystery Blogger Award” all about it and here is her explanation of the award:

“’Mystery Blogger Award’ is an award for amazing bloggers with ingenious posts. Their blog not only captivates; it inspires and motivates. They are one of the best out there, and they deserve every recognition they get. This award is also for bloggers who find fun and inspiration in blogging; and they do it with so much love and passion.”
– Okoto Enigma

As you can imagine, after reading this explanation I am humbled that Musings And Margaritas very kindly nominated me for this award. I really enjoyed reading her blog post about her nomination and reading her answers to questions so I could get to know her better. You can read her blog post here.

The award comes with some rules & guidelines to follow and also questions to answer so that readers can get to know more about the nominee. So here goes…

 “3 Things About Me”:

1. I graduated with a 2:1 Bachelor Of The Arts Degree in “Modern Drama Studies” from Brunel University (Greater London, England UK). Post Grad I worked in the ‘Community Arts‘ field; So I’ve delivered drama workshops in a variety of settings. From schools for children with special educational needs, to sessions in a high security female prison (told you it was varied! Lol)

2. At 23 I became very ill and very immobile from a chronic pain condition called ‘Fibromyalgia‘ which as a very basic explanation; not only affects your muscles/ tendons & ligaments but also gives you a hyper sensitive nervous system to heighten the severity of pain & discomfort you get when using your muscles to do things.

For a decade I have run my own support group on Facebook “Helen’s FIBROMYALGIA AWARENESS GROUP (also relevant for other chronic illness)” for sufferers & their loved ones to get support, encouragement, help, advice & a safe place to discuss things. But also for non sufferers to join and gain an understanding of the condition and more widely the issues that chronic pain sufferers face daily. (Please feel free to click on he groups name above to take you to the Facebook group and join us…)

3. On my travels around the world I’ve enjoyed many experiences: lying inside a tomb inside an ancient Egyptian pyramid, riding a camel, quad biking in the Sahara Desert, skiing on The Alps, visiting the most southern point of the USA closest to cuba, watching the musical ’42nd Street’ on New Yorks 42nd Street, climbing the Statue Of Liberty… im so blessed that I could carry on writing this list.  (I feel another blog post coming out of this! lol)

Next is to introduce ‘My Best Blog Post’:

I think my overall favourite would have to be the post I wrote on the 1 year anniversary of my Grandad passing away. This is because out of sitting down to write this post all about “Making Friends With Grief I actually came away from this process with not only a blog post but also with a treasured poem I wrote all about my Grandad. It would mean a lot to me if you’d click here to read the poem ❤

The next part is for me to answer the 5 questions Musings and Margaritas chose to ask me:

⭐ What’s your process for when you write a post?

Well as I’ve only been blogging for 8 weeks, I do not have a ‘Blog Post Planner’ which gives me a planned calendar of blog posts. I literally just chose each week what I will write about depending on what’s on my heart at that time or what specific things are going on that week. I literally open up a blank page and let my heart spill out onto the screen. Once written I then look at creating the media for the post (images, banners, Pinterest imagine etc)

⭐ What are your career goals?

If money or health weren’t an issue, I’d love to build upon my online support group and open up and run my own ‘Chronic Illness Support Centre’ so there is a physical space sufferers could attend with access to alternative treatments and therapies all in one place.

⭐ What is your favourite type of genre to read?

This has defiantly changed throughout my different ages and seasons in life. At the moment it is: Motivational / Self Help / Christian Spiritual Support.

⭐ Preferred writing style- factual or fictional? First person or Third person?

Fiction; as I write from the heart, from my imagination and a place of creativity – which is why some of my posts also include a poem. Mostly in the first person as I share my point of view, opinions, experiences and feelings.

⭐ Funny/weird one- If you had to change your name what would you change it to and why?

The silly side of me is tempted to say ‘Gertrude’ just for fun of it! 😉 Whereas the sentimental side of me wants to pick a name that’s more fitting to my Spirit, such as ‘Hope’.

helens journey mystery blogger award nominations

My Nominations:

I also have to nominate other bloggers for the award. So I’ve chosen the bloggers who have helped me the most these past 8 weeks of blogging with support, advice, encouragement & interacting with my blog. They are:

Being Native – Back to my Roots / Maya Maceka / Sunburnt Aloe / Open The Kimono / My Penned Heart / Blissfully Bubbly / Something So True / BDD & Me / Rheumatoid Life

Below are the 5 questions i have chosen to ask those I have nominated above:

1. What is your reason “WHY?” for blogging?

(I ask this question as this is what my second blog post was all about: ‘My “Why?” For Blogging’)

2. If you could only choose one social media platform to use to promote your blog, which one would it be and why?

3. If you could go back to when you were writing your 1st blog post – what piece of advice on writing blogs, would you give yourself?

4. What is the best app you use for your blogs media? (creating images, logos, banners, pins etc)

5. (funny or weird question) If you had to choose a holiday destination that best summed up your blog, where would it be and why?

Finally here are the rules and guidelines for what being nominated for this blog award entails:
