Welcome to my new series ‘CHRONIC ILLNESS JOKE OF THE WEEK’. Where I will be doing exactly that – sharing with you a joke that can be appreciated by people living with chronic illness and their loved ones. But they are also for non-sufferers too, to give them an insight into our world of living with chronic illness and what it brings with it…
Chronic Illness Joke of the Week! Week 3 – A joke about being asked by a new doctor to give your ‘brief’ medical history when you have multiple chronic conditions
This weeks giggle is all about being asked about your medical history, which when you have chronic illness can be a complex answer because most have a whole list of umbrella conditions that you also have along side or because of the main chronic illness you have. For example; I had IBS for 7 years before I got Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, I had CFS for 2 years before I developed ‘Fibromyalgia’. But I also have as part of the parcel Hyper-mobility, Tendinitis, TMJ, Delayed Sleep Phase Syndrome, Sciatica, etc…
All of these conditions are interlinked and so you can imagine my amusement when I saw the following chronic illness meme for this weeks joke about a new doctor asking for a ‘BRIEF’ description of your medical history:
I run a Facebook support group ‘HELEN’S FIBROMYALGIA AWARENESS & CHRONIC ILLNESS SUPPORT GROUP’ for people with chronic illness and their loved ones. In it I share a number of jokes or lighthearted meme’s about life with chronic illness and the group is able to identify together, laugh together and acknowledge a united struggle so no one feels alone. I wanted to share this with my blog readers too, hence ‘Chronic Illness Joke of the Week’ series being created.
I’m not saying what we face isn’t serious, I’m just sharing an alternative way we can deal with some of its elements. What I call ‘laughter medicine’ as smiling and laughing releases endorphins which are also known as the bodies ‘happy hormone’. So really we are helping our bodies to experience something more than just pain by laughing and smiling when we can. It’s an important part of my personal care plan for living with chronic illness. I talk more about things I’ve learnt from over a decade with chronic illness in this post: Top 5 Life Lessons Fibromyalgia has taught me!
Remember I will be posting 1 new joke a week and they can be found under ‘Chronic Illness Life’ from the blog menu or by clicking HERE – don’t miss out on laughing at previous weeks jokes below too:

This is actually a really good idea! I laughed when I read the title. The world is so misinformed about chronic illnesses that no one truly understands our experiences. I’ve wanted to say these things to medical professionals all of the time, as I’d need over an hour to explain a “brief” medical history. I look forward to hearing your other “jokes.”
